Chromic Gut is an absorbable sterile surgical suture composed of purified connective tissue (mostly collagen) derived from the serosal layer of beef (bovine) intestines that has been treated with chromic salt solution. The suture is packaged in a formulated solution of solution of 90% Isopropyl Alcohol, 1% Triethanolamine, and 100% Pure Distilled Water.
- Treated with a buffered chromium salt solution, resulting in a chromic strand with more predictable strength and uniform absorption.
- Purity of collagen for optimal tensile strength and performance.
- Surface smoothness to facilitate knot run-down
- Excellent knot security
Chromic Gut suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in ophthalmic surgery, but not in cardiovascular or neurological surgery.
When Chromic Gut is placed in tissue, a moderate to acute tissue inflammation occurs characteristic of foreign body response to a substance. This is followed by a loss of tensile strength and suture mass.
Many variable factors may affect the rate of tensile strength loss. Some of the major factors:
- Presence of infection
- Tissue sites
Absorption of Chromic Gut suture occurs by enzymatic process similar to the digestion of an animal protein by the body. Being enzymatic, the process is subject to different influencing factors (see above) and it is virtually impossible to indicate the exact designation of a consistent absorption time.
Chromic surgical gut suture is supplied in precut lengths attached to various needle types in one-dozen boxes.
